This is a question we hear quite frequently. The short answer is that many years ago, evaporative cooling was the only way to cool a home. Many home builders did not offer air conditioning as part of the home build. Yikes! This went on well into the 1970s.
The 1960s must have been rough. Only a handful of homes in the 1950's did have an air conditioner, however it was very expensive, and not very efficient. Slowly over the decades, the air conditioner became a normal part of a new home. In the Scottsdale area, there were so many homes homes that started with a evaporative cooler that it made sense to produce a unit that would easily take the place of the evaporative cooler. However, installing an air conditioner on top of a roof is a bit strange. It hots up there!
After awhile the rooftop packaged heat pump was born and was made to be up-fitted onto the roof where the old evaporative cooler was. The rooftop heat pump takes place of the old furnace inside as well. Heating and air conditioning all from the same packaged system.
Today, many homes in the Scottsdale, Tempe and Phoenix areas have had the rooftop ac or heat pump replaced many times. When the rooftop heat pump or air conditioner reaches an age of approx. 10-15 years, its time for replacement. Gone are the days where the old air conditioner would run for 30 years! Of course, today the new heat pumps are much more efficient. The starting efficiency rating for new heat pump in 2020 is 14 SEER. We've come a long way compared to a SEER level of 5 in the 1970's
